2009-10 New York Jets Season
The priority for the Jets this season was hiring a new Head Coach. After many interviews and an attempt to bring former Head Coach Bill Cower out of retirement, the Jets settled on the Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan. Along with Ryan, the Jets signed former Ravens LB Bart Scott and former Ravens S Jim Leonard.
Leaving the team were Laveranues Coles (who signed with the Bengals) and kicker Mike Nugent (signed with the Buccaneers). The Jets also traded CB Lito Sheppard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2009 5th round draft pick and a conditional 2010 draft pick.
In the draft, the Jets used their first round pick on USC QB Mark Sanchez (5th overall pick), their 3rd round pick on Iowa RB Shonn Greene (65th overall pick) and their 6th round pick on Nebraska-Lincoln G Matt Slauson (193rd overall pick).
On August 26th the Jets named Mark Sanchez the Starting Quarterback over veteran QB Kellen Clemens.
2008-09 New York Jets Season
The 49th Season for the New York Jets opened with some serious acquisitions that took a large chunk out of the salary cap. The team signed former Pittsburgh LG Alan Faneca (5-year, $40-million), former Cardinals LB Calvin Pace (6yr-$42 million) and former Detroit Lions T Damien Woody (5-yr $25.5 million). The team also experienced some departures but the biggest was QB Chad Pennington signing with the Miami Dolphins. The biggest acquisition was of QB Brett Favre who was traded by the Packers on August 7 for a conditional 2009 draft pick.
In the 2008 draft, the Jets had 6 picks and used their 1st round picks on Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston, Perdue TE Dustin Keller, San Jose State CB Dwight Lowery, Tennessee QB Erik Ainge, Kansas WR Marcus Henry and Arkansas OT Nate Garner.
Led by Favre, the Jets split the first four games and were 2-2 by the 5th week (and bye). In the week 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals, Favre threw for 6 touchdown passes, a personal best and one fewer than the NFL record.
The Jets finished the season at 9-7, good for third place in the AFC East and again failed to make the playoffs. After the season, the Jets released QB Brett Favre and on December 29th, the team fired Head Coach Erin Mangini
2007-08 New York Jets Season
The sophomore season for Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini was supposed to be easier. After finishing 2006 with a 10-6 record, Coach Mangini looked to upgrade his squad and went out and signed DE Michael Haynes, QB Marques Tuiasospo, and DE Andre Wadsworth. The retirement of Curtis Martin, the leagues 4th leading rusher in NFL History, was addressed with the signing of former Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones. In the draft, the Jets selected only four players, having dealt away their other picks. They chose CB Darrelle Revis with their 1st pick (14th overall), IL David Harris, OT Jacob Bender and WR Chansi Stuckey rounded out the smallest draft in the history of the New York Jets.
The season began with the team going 1-8 by their bye week. The break didn’t help much too much as the team went 3-4 for a final record of 4-12, third in the AFC East and they did not qualify for the playoffs.
Previous Seasons
Chad Pennington, the quarterback selected by the team in the first round of the 2000 draft, took over as starter in 2002. Pennington, from MAC school Marshall, excelled in 2002 but had to deal with injuries in 2003 and 2004. Last year, Pennington still managed to finish with better than 2,600 yards and 16 touchdowns but wasn’t able to throw the deep ball as effectively as he would have liked to. Curtis Martin, now into his 30s, surprised a lot of people by leading the entire league in rushing with 1,697 yards and 4.6 yards a carry. Martin was also able to find the end zone on a more regular basis after 12 scores in 2004. Martin also contributed out of the backfield, registering 41 receptions for 245 yards and another two scores. Backup Lamont Jordan was looking for more touches and more money, neither of which the Jets could offer, so he left for Oakland in the off-season. The Jets also traded wide receiver Santana Moss to the Redskins and received Laveranues Coles, a player that was with the Jets before leaving in free agency a few years ago. Moss never really became a receiver that fit the Jets system and while Coles finished with solid stats last season in Washington (90 receptions, 950 yards), he was used more as a possession receiver. Now that he’s back in New York, Pennington will have his favorite receiver back.
The Jets defense played much better in 2004 then they did in 2003 and finished with a top-10 defensive ranking. Eric Barton led the team with 107 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss while Shaun Ellis had a team high 11 sacks. Eric Coleman led the team with four interceptions while rookie Jonathan Vilma might have been the best player on the entire unit in 2004. Vilma, an inside linebacker from the University of Miami, was the only other player on the team to register more than 100 tackles while also collecting 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Vilma also showed he can drop into coverage by tying for second on the team with three picks, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Vilma’s on-field accomplishments earned him a huge reward in the form of being named Defensive Rookie of the Year.
The special teams will look different from 2004 in two big ways. First off, the trading of Moss means the team will need to find a new player to return punts, something Moss did quite well last season. The other difference will be at place kicker where Doug Brien won’t be back for another season after missing some clutch kicks in the playoff game last season. The Jets actually went in a direction that few teams do and used their first selection in the 2005 draft (second round, 47 th overall) to draft Mike Nugent, a place kicker out of Ohio State University. Nugent possesses a powerful and accurate leg and even though he hasn’t faced a pressure kick in the NFL, he had plenty to deal with kicking for the Buckeyes.
